Position Title: Fisheries Scientist I – Tempe, AZ

Description: The Native Fish Lab of Marsh & Associates, LLC is dedicated to efforts that promote conservation, recovery, and public education in behalf of the community of imperiled native fishes of the desert southwest. Our passionate team is seeking a Fisheries Scientist to assist with native fish conservation studies both on the Colorado River, in small streams in Arizona and New Mexico, and on other projects in the region. Our current monitoring activities include remote sensing using acoustic telemetry and PIT scanning antennas, backpack and boat electrofishing, minnow trapping, netting, and habitat evaluations. Check out our website at for additional information about past and on-going projects.

This is a full-time position. Fisheries Scientists will explore the waters of the desert Southwest 8-10 hours a day while in the field for multiple days per trip, at least two to three weeks every month. Field work is expected to be 60% – 75% of a Fisheries Scientist’s work schedule. Being in the field includes extended overnight travel and camping at remote sites under potentially adverse conditions, including extreme heat. A typical field week is Monday – Friday at a location outside of the Phoenix metro area, which means field crews are on location for the duration of the trip. Some field locations require hiking and packing gear to and from the sampling site. As part of a small team, the Fisheries Scientist will operate motor vehicles and small watercraft, collect and identify aquatic biota, obtain environmental samples, and record data.

When not in the field you will be in our casual office during regular business hours entering trip data, compiling project status reports, as well as performing general office and laboratory duties.

Qualifications: Competitive candidates will have a bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related field with an emphasis on a fisheries related discipline or similar, or three years related laboratory or field research, or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Experience with small watercraft operation and maintenance, scientific writing, stream, river, and reservoir sampling, and familiarity with ArcGIS and the Microsoft Office Suite are preferred. Enthusiasm for the outdoors and native fish conservation is a must.

Experience driving vehicles, including backing with a trailer, is also desired. You must show proof of authorization to work in the United States, have a clean driving record, and possess or be willing to obtain an Arizona driver’s license.

Salary and Benefits are competitive. The starting salary for this position is $34,680. Benefits include, but are not limited to a generous paid holiday, vacation, and sick leave program, as well as health, dental, and vision insurance coverage options. Marsh & Associates, LLC is a drug-free workplace.
